What's With the HNK?

It, like me, is short and to the point.

Married To Kim

My wonderful companion-for-life grew up in Kent, Washington, and is a graduate of Western Washington University.  The wedded bliss began in ’87.  She teaches pre-K 4 year olds part-time at the Mustard Seed Christian Preschool in Hillsboro, OR.

My Role As A Father

I am the father of 4 awesome and mighty teens and young adults:

  • Robert - serving in the US Army (infantry), 10th Mountain Division, Fort Drum, NY; deployed in Afghanistan.
  • Stephen - junior at George Fox University, majoring in math and philosophy, on his school's varsity speech and debate team, president of his campus' International Justice Mission chapter; and a Ford Family Foundation Scholar.
  • Hope - freshman at George Fox University,  majoring in nursing and minoring Spanish, spent the summer on a missions trip in Panama with her cousins.
  • Hannah - junior at Lincoln High School, in the youth group and youth choir at Portland Christian Center, helps in the the nursery at Mosaic Church, and has a pug named Finnigan.

My Life's Mission

  • I am a communicator – a writer and a speaker – as well as a pioneer and a mentor.  I’ve always wanted to “go where no man had gone before.”  I have learned that while I cannot always do so geographically, I can do so missionally.  I am committed to taking the road less traveled.  Happily, that doesn’t mean going alone.
  • I have a wonderful life partner in Kim.  Together our hearts beat for recruiting, training, mobilizing and supporting people who will join us in reconciling the alienated, freeing the oppressed and embracing the misfit.

What Am I Up to Now?

I have recently publish a missional book called Night Shift: Crossing the Cultural Line for the Kingdom.  As the Program Manager at the Northeast Emergency Food Program, I lead a team of staff and volunteers in providing food and clothing to thousands of clients each year.  Our church home is Mosaic, where we attend the fourth Sunday service at 7 pm.  Kim and I lead a Life Group, Kim and our girls help in the nursery and I fiddle in the worship rock band, generally every third Sunday evening.
